I was traveling in my car one evening listening to my favorite talk radio show when I heard an advertisement for Splish Splash. Splish Splash is a huge water park in Long Island a few miles away from where I live.

The advertisement said something like this:

Don’t let the high price of gas dampen your summer vacation plans. Come to Splish Splash and enjoy a fun-filled bargain "daycation" !

This advertisement caught my attention because it was a confirmation of a news article I recently read which explained that increasing numbers of Americans are vacationing at home or very close to home due to the high cost of fuel. The article dubbed this growing trend towards vacationing at or close to home with the term, "staycation"!

Vacation and travel industry companies are rapidly changing their advertising campaigns and promotional offers to take advantage of the growing "staycation" trend. The Splish Splash "daycation" ad is a prime example of this. I also heard that Expedia is giving away free gas discount coupons with the purchase of any vacation package in a effort to boost business.

Now there absolutely nothing wrong with taking local vacations or spending vacation time at home if that is really what you want to do.
